From One Electrician’s Vision to Four-Time Award Winner: Suffolk Security Systems Honored Again

In the mid-1980s, Greenport electrician Sal Prato saw a growing need on Long Island’s East End. With economic uncertainty and rising concerns about theft and intrusion, local residents and business owners were looking for ways to protect what mattered most. Sal, always resourceful, learned to install alarm systems and began offering them alongside his electrical services.

What started as a modest add-on quickly gained traction. Demand grew, and “Alarms by Sal Prato” became a trusted name in local security. By 1989, Sal officially incorporated the business as Suffolk Security, shifting his focus from wiring homes to safeguarding them.

For the next decade, Sal ran Suffolk Security with dedication and grit. As technology evolved, so did the business. Eventually, with just one employee and a thriving client base, Sal decided it was time to pass the torch. After months of negotiation, the company was sold and renamed Suffolk Security Systems — still with just one employee, but with big plans ahead.

Fast-forward 26 years, and Suffolk Security Systems has grown into one of the East End’s most respected security providers. With a team that now spans multiple disciplines and specialties, the company offers a wide range of technically advanced, user-friendly solutions. Despite its growth, Suffolk Security Systems remains deeply rooted in the community, treating employees like family and customers like friends.

This October, Suffolk Security Systems was honored once again by Dan’s Papers, winning Best Security Alarm Company for the fourth consecutive year. The award, voted on by readers, reflects the company’s enduring commitment to quality, service, and local values.
